Changing the Guard in Poland: The US Army sends a brigade to Operation Atlantic Resolve on the eastern flank of NATO. The military device will probably cross Brandenburg again. At the beginning of the year, this had already caused some criticism in the country.
By the end of the week, US tanks are likely to roll through Brandenburg towards Poland – probably freight trains. In addition, a lot of other military equipment is brought to Poland by rail.
The army supplies are replenishments for the operation “Atlantic Resolve” of the US armed forces together with the Polish military, which runs since 2014 in Poland – triggered by the Crimea crisis and intended as a power demonstration opposite Moscow.
Transport on the road has not been planned so far
The military equipment – including the 24 armored infantry fighting vehicles – arrived in Bremerhaven on Sunday and has been transported on the road to Bergen since Tuesday. From there it will be loaded on trains and taken to Poland – probably on the same route as in January and March. That would go through Brandenburg.
Whether there will possibly also be a transport on the road through Brandenburg, is so far unclear. The plan was not that, but the final decision on it was in the US military, said the press officer of the State Command Bremen, Lars Dörmann, rbb | 24. The US Army must coordinate with Deutsche Bahn on the transport capacity.
US brigade in Poland is replaced
Equipment and equipment belong to a brigade of the 1st US Infantry Division in Kansas. She replaces her predecessor brigade, which arrived in Poland nine months ago. The return journey of the detached brigade will take place over the next few weeks via Germany as a transit country – probably also through Brandenburg again.
US troop transport caused protests in Brandenburg
At the beginning of the year there were protests because of the US troop transport through Brandenburg: politicians of the co-governing Left Party demonstrated at the gates of the military training area Lehnin.
Even Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) was skeptical about the transport. At a New Year’s reception in Cottbus, he said: “I believe that, despite all the difficulties, we should seek dialogue with Russia.” The fact that Woidke, who also acts as Poland’s representative of the Federal Government, made himself strong for the interests of Russia, caused a scandal.
